End of Day 2

End of day 2 at the Borgata I have 170,000 chips with 33 people left.

I had 65k when I got back from the dinner break but quickly lost about 20k. Then I picked up 88 and doubled through JohnnyBax's KJ to get up to almost 100. Then I was in the BB with AT and an active player open limped, the button called and I checked the BB. I flopped middle pair and it was checked around, on the turn a 7 peeled off making it a JT67 board. The active player bet 10k after I checked and I called. The river was a Q and he bet 20k and I called and he showed 56. That got me to about 128k - for the first time I felt like I had a little room to manouver.

I raised once to 12k on the button with AKo and the SB called and I flopped two pair and he folded the flop.

On one hand I got a free look in the BB with Jd9d and I flopped the nut straight on a two club board. Bax bet 15k, I made it 45k and both the original limper and Bax folded. I could've maybe smooth called here but I can't really let the button at a club draw and maybe I give someone else a chance to make a mistake.

So during the 3k-6k level I had about 150k when this hand came up. Fairly tight player opens in EP for 18k, loosish caller calls behind and Bax calls one off the button. I'm on the button and find AKo and jam for the full 150k. Everyone folded and I picked up a ton of dead money... it was the perfect stack size to jam in that spot and I had the perfect hand. The first smooth caller thought a long time before folding what he said was AJ suited.

I lost one pot and paid some blinds and antes in the 4-8k level to finish at 170,000.

The biggest pair I saw today were 99 and 88 and I won coinflips with each of those hands but it would sure be nice to see kings or aces tomorrow.

In the money at the Borgata

I made the money at the Borgata. I have 65k chips which is well below average but I'm still alive. I fell to 22k during the last level but found a near triple up with AK against AJ (and AJ re-raised TT out of the hand which would've beaten me, thanks JohnnyBax).

Its dinner break and when we go back the blinds will be 2k-4k so hopefully I pick up some big hands.

Borgata Day 1

I ended day 1 at the Borgata with 32500. Some quick hands :

Level 2 - Tight player brings it in for 600 (blinds 50-100), I call in LP with 7hTh, button calls, blinds call. Flop is J98 two spades. Raiser bets 2200, I make it 6000, the button cold calls and everyone and the raiser folds. The turn is a low spade, I bet 5000, button calls quite quickly. The river is an offsuit king and it goes check check and my hand is good. A few hands later I limp behind a limper with 5c3c and the flop is 742 rainbow. I bet 400, button makes it 800 (yay for min raisers when you're drawing), everyone else folds and I call. The turn is an ace, I check , button bets 500, I make it 2000, he calls. River is 6, still rainbow. Hard to put him on 58 there so I am pretty sure I have the best hand and bet 3000 and the button calls (with just a 7 I think!).

I got moved at the beginning of level 3. Andy Black was the only player I recognized at this table. I won some small pots to get to 52k at the last hand of the level when I raised to 600 with 96o (half the table had gotten up anyway). The big blind re-raised me, but small, to 1700. I decided to take a flop. The flop was A74 two diamonds and the blind bet out 1500. Normally when I see a preflop re-raise that's so small I don't think big ace, so I decided to call with nothing and take it away on the turn. The turn is a 5d, I do have a diamond, and now a straight draw, the bb checks, I bet 3500, he mucks AsJs face up. Wrong read, right aggression I guess.

Level 4 (100/200/25), I played one kinda scary pot. I raised in EP to 600 with JsJh. Both blinds called. The flop came Tc8c4c and the big blind bet 1700. He's an aggressive player, so he could have a big club, a pair and a club, a flush, I was kinda torn. But I think calling here is the best play... The turn was a 9s and he again bet out large, 4000. Now I'm a little tentative but still pretty confident he could be on a big range here, so I call again. The river is an offsuit 7 and he bets out 8000. Now I'm a bit sick because the pot is huge, I have a straight but my opp could have easily flopped a flush. I call the 8000 and he shows Jc8s, so we chop it up. Kinda bittersweet there. One of those times when I wish my opponent had tried to play a little smaller pot and I feel a little unlucky not to have won, but it wasn't a disaster.A little later a tight shortstacked player made it 600 and I called in position with 77 and Andy Black called behind us. The flop was T74 all diamonds and the preflop raiser bet 1500 leaving himself about 6000. I made it 5000, Andy folded and the preflop raiser went all in. I called and he had AA with no flush draw. However, he turned an ace and I lost a nasty one.

I got moved again to a table where I played my final four levels. I got it up to 50k again and hung at 46k through level 5. Level 6 was a disaster though. I made a bad play at a pot and never flopped anything when I saw flops. I was down to 32k at the dinner break (level 6). At the end of level 7 I had only 26k but chipped up a bit in the last level. Off to sleep as it was a long day.

$1500NL

Here's my recap of the $1500 NL:

Started with 7k chips, blind 25/50. First hand I lose 3000. I limp in with Qh9h and two others limp behind me and the flop comes Th7h6s, I bet 175, get one caller and then the button raises to 575. I call, the other player folds. The turn is the Jd and I check call 1000 now with my open ender and flush draw... admittedly a loose call. The turn comes 6h and I bet 1000 and the button jams. It was a pretty easy laydown really and after I laid it down he showed 6's full of 10's.

Level 2 a hilarious hand comes down. I raise in EP to 300 with 88, I get re-raised to 700 and then the button makes it 1500. The other two players in the hand each have more than 10k... but the button is a total donkey. I'm putting the first re-raiser on a huge hand, and I know I have to fold my 88. It gets back to the player who made it 700 and he moves all in for like 10k. Huge overbet. The button hems and haws and calls with ATo. AA for the other player. Of course the flop has an 8 in it. So if the button isn't the world's worst player, I put 400 more in and then double through the guy with aces.

Level 3 (75/150)- I see 33 and limp behind a limper for 150 leaving myself about 3900. The blinds come along and the flop is T63. The blinds check and the limper bets 600, I call, and the small blind moves all in and has us both covered easily. The first player folds, I of course call, and my 33 beats his top two pair.

Level 4 (100/200) - I get moved to a new table and immediately donk off about 3500. In a limped pot I double up the small blind with AT vs his T7 on a T7x flop. I get it back quickly after when I raise with JJ, the button calls and doubles me up on the 7 high flop (he had 99). I then donk off some to a tight player when I had 5c9c on a 5x8c3c flop, he has tc4c and he makes a pair of tens on the turn. One of those hands where I don't know if my draw or my pair is any good and on the turn neither were good. I then win a nice pot with JJ when the CO comes in for 600, the button calls and I make it 2600 from the SB. The cutoff rather quickly calls and the button folds. The flop is J55 but I don't make any other money in the hand as no overcards come - I believe my opp had AQ. I ended level 4 with 10500.

Level 5 (200/400/25) - I went on a nice rush at the beginning of this level to get to about 12000... then UTG brings it in for 1200 and I re-raise to 4000 with AK. The action gets back to him and he jams for 6900 total. I make the easy call and he has 99 but I don't improve and I'm now down to 5500. Again, I pick up some nice hands and get back up above 10k.

Level 6 (300/600/60) - I finally went carddead- and I wasn't about to push the issue becuase I had been raising quite a bit. I basically blind off to 7600 at the very last hand of the level when this hand comes up. (Now there are about 8 tables left so the average stack is like 18,000). UTG limps - which I don't think is that big of a deal because he has limped often. MP makes it only 1500(I'm not even sure he notices the limper). And then a player who has played pretty strange and loose jams for like 16k. The action gets to me in the BB and I have AcQc. I'm not worried about the limper, and I think that I might have the loose jammer dominated even, and the guy who made it 1500 hadn't been at the table for more than a few hands so I didn't really know what to put him on. (I had played with the guy before though and suspected that he was the kind of guy to protect a big pair with a large raise). So I mulled my options and decided to call all in. Well, the guy who made it 1500 calls both of us and has kings. The loose player has 66 and the flop brings a Q and a K and that's it for me. Out with around 80 players left.

Tonight I chopped a one table satellite for the $2500 so I will be playing that tourney on Friday and playing at a discount...

$2500NL

The tournament can be summed up in one hand:

The first hand of the 200/400/25 level, Jean Robert (not Action Bob) Bellande makes it 1000 on the button, the big blind is still not back from break, I am in the SB with KTo and 6000 chips behind. Seeing as Bellande is raising often and with 1650 dead money in the pot I think its a trivial push. It was however a trivial call for Bellande as he had aces and that was the end of me.

There were some soft spots at my table but I never found a hand against them. Some examples... First level. CO brings it in for 150, button calls, Jean Robert calls from the BB. Flop is A24, Co bets 600, button makes it 1200, Jean Robert jams for like 8500, CO folds, button insta calls with AK. Jean Robert had 35, which wasn't a shock. Another great hand is when seat 7 brings it in in middle position for 500. Seat 3 calls from the SB and the flop is J24 two clubs. Seat 3 (the bad player) check calls. The turn is a Q and seat 3 check calls again. The river is a T, no flushes and seat 3 checks, seat 7 bets 2500 and seat 3 raises to 5000, seat 7 calls. A good player could have alot of hands in this spot, one I thought of was AcKc - but seat 3 makes a half value bet half bluff with AQ and seat 7 wins a monster pot with QT.

Seat 3's demise happens here... with about 8k he limps UTG for 150. The button makes it 675 and Jean Robert calls out of the SB. Limper calls. Flop is AQT and Jean Robert bets 1000, Seat 3(original limper) calls, button folds. The turn is a blank 5 and Jean Robert bets 1500 and Seat 3 jams for about 6400 with A9o. JR has KJ for the nuts.

I think I played only one mildly interesting hand. I had about 9000 in the BB (75/150) and UTG+3 brings it in for 450. I've played against this player before, he's very aggressive, always continuation bets, but he's also not a maniac. I have TT and decide to just call preflop. The flop is 832, I check, the raiser bets 650, I call. The turn is a 5. I am pretty confident I have the best hand but I'm not sure how to play it. I decide to lead for 1600 and the raiser thinks a bit and makes it 3600. This is a really sticky spot I've gotten myself into... I think he's aggressive to pick up weakness in my betting pattern and take it away with overcards, but he also could have a big pair or a set. I finally felt like my hand was no good and I mucked it. I'm still not sure of the best course of action there.

So, not much of a report I guess. I might play a super tonight or tomorrow if i the $10k vouchers are trasnferrable, or I might just hang out until the main event.

Borgata

I'm here at the Borgata -

I ran a $250+20 one table satellite this evening and finished 7th - not too great. The tenative plan is to buy-in tomorrow to the $1500 NL and then try to win some satellites for Friday's $2500 NL.

Wish me luck!

Almost LA, Plus Sunday

Well, on Saturday night I played in the $250 qualifier on Bodog for the LA Poker Classic. I ran really well... I was down below 2000 when early position opened and then the button min re-raised, I had queens in the blinds and decided to jam. Of course the min re-raiser had kings but I hit the queen on the river.

After that I flopped a bunch of sets and had premium starting hands and had 27k of the 63k in play 8 handed at the final table. (Only one LA seat given out, second got nothing). I finally get heads up with a 41k to 22k lead. I win the first pot heads up and then my opponent got kings and aces back to back, both times I flopped a pair and the first time I doubled him. So he reversed things on me, then I flopped a pair against him when he turned a flush and lost some more. Finally, down to 10 big blinds I pushed with 66 and he called with A5 and won.

I really rushed the first hand he doubled up. I saw the end in site and pushed my chips in and hoped I had the best hand or outdrew him. But after that the deck just crushed him. A very frustrating loss to be sure.

Sunday so far has been a joke. Interpoker I never had any chips, tried a move and lost. Bodog I got some chips, lost a key coinflip and then pushed from the sb with q8 and ran into qj. Pokerroom I lost in the second hour with ak vs a9 all in preflop.

On Party a guy with 890 chips raised to 90 (3xbb) utg , I made it 290 from the button with QQ, he somehow called with 66, flopped a set and doubled through me. You have to love putting 35% of your stack with 66. Then I doubled up to 800 or so and then a player on tilt decided to re-re-raise all in after I had re-raised an utg raiser with AQ. He had 44 and he won, so I was short stacked again and busted soon later.

On dise I was handed an absolute gift when someone slowplayed AA preflop (on level 1 this isn't a great play folks) and I flopped a set of tens. Then two hilarious hands popped up :

Yeah, I like putting in 900 of 1600 preflop with the blinds 15/30 holding Q9 also.

Then this hand, which I am obviously a donkey for not leading the turn on. But does the guy have to re-raise me with KQ and THEN get there?

Party $100

Well, I finished second tonight in the 7pm Party $100 for $6660. It was a nice feeling for sure. Heads up lasted only one hand when I re-raised my opponent with 22 and he called with KQ and won the coinflip.

It was very nice to do well in a Party tournament again... I've had a long dry spell there.

Played in a bunch of other tournaments/satellites and went deep in a couple but didn't win anything big. Other than that, 20/40 has been running better lately also, so things are looking up.

I'm leaving for Atlantic City on Tuesday - looking forward to that.

argh

Frustrating tournament day...summary :

$200+16 Winner's Choice on Full Tilt. I had to buy in because Full Tilt still hasn't redeamed my lost satellite win. Anwyay, a unique hand came up where I called a min raise on the button with Jd9d, (I believe I called 120 initially, and then the bb made a moronic small raise that built the pot and I put 240 of my 1900 stack in preflop vs three other players). The flop came down Qd 8d 6s giving me a nice two way draw. The blind re-raiser went all in, 1500 into the 1000 pot, another stack that had me covered flat called and I went all in. AQ vs 88 vs my draw and I missed so I was out early.

$300 Qualifier on Dise : This is a 5 handed qualifier with a great structure to their Atlantis tournament. About 10 hands in a really aggressive donkey raised utg and I was on the button with AA and I put in a re-raise. The SB made a small re-raise and utg flat called. I decided that the SB was doing to call so I just went all in and they both called. KK for the SB and Ad2d for the utg donkey. The flop was Kxx and then went diamond diamond so the donkey scooped. This may be the neatest qualifier ever and I think I have a big edge here. I will be playing this tourney a lot.

$200 Qualifier on Dise : I started off slowly as usual, but finally got up to about 10k when this somewhat bizarre hand happened. We were at the 100/200 level when two players limped in and I raised on the button with AK to 1050, the SB had the same amount of chips as I did and min re-raised to 1900. The limpers folded. His re-raise was a sign of a strong hand normally so I decided to just call and take a look at the flop. The flop came A34, which was great for me, but as anyone says in this situation that means you aren't getting paid off by QQ type pairs. My opponent made a very small bet and I called. The turn was a blank club, putting three clubs on the board and I had the Kc. (Ac was on the board). My opponent bet out small again and this time I made a small raise and he called. The river was an offsuit king and he checked, I bet an amount I thought he would call with queens or jacks (hoping that he didn't spike the 1 outer with KK), so I bet 3000 of his remaining 5500. He called and my hand was good. I was amongst the chip leaders with about 35 left.

I then lost a bunch of chips in two hands. The first was when I raised with 76 and a big stack called me from the bb. The flop came down J54 two diamonds and he min bet into me. I think the most common read here is a diamond draw, but I wanted to put a little pressure on him and take a free card on the turn so I raised his 400 bet to 2000. He called quickly. The turn was a diamond that didn't give me a straight and it went check/check. The river missed me again and i was forced to fold when he bet.

On a very similar hand, I raised from EP with 87 suited. I was trying to mix it up here a bit and accumulate chips when the blinds were still small. A different big blind called again and the flop was JT7 two spades. My opponent checked and I bet 2000 and he quickly called. The turn was a king and it went check/check. The river was an offsuite 9 which gave me a donkey straight. My opponent bet 2400 and with the pot laying me over 3:1 I called and he won with QsJs. (why he didn't raise the flop is beyond me).

So fast forward to a hand where I am in the BB with 36o. The player from the QQ/AK hand open limped , as he did often and the flop was 3d6hJh. I checked, the limper bet near the pot, I raised, he went all in, and I called quickly as its pretty hard to put him on something other than one pair. He had KdJd and runnered diamonds to beat my two pair - and I was down to 3000 (5 big blinds) with about 18 players left.

I posted the BB and found ATo and a player open limped, the SB completed, and I jammed. The limper folded but the SB called with A2 and I knew it was over when I saw the A43 flop. The 5 on the turn sealed the deal.

$25 rebuy qualifier on dise : This tourney can be summed up in two hands after the break. One where I had top pair good kicker against an uber donkey and put chips in the pot and timed out because my connection went out - and I lost some chips there. the other was when he opened the pot for 1400 (blinds were 100/200) and I jammed for 3300 with Ad9d. I wouldn't normally do this but he had put large raises in before with shitty ass cards. He had A5 and the 5 on the river sent me home.

$150+12 on Party : I got up to 1500 when I ran two pair into a larger two pair against another uber donk.

$250+20 LA qualifier on Bodog : I actually flopped a set and won a nice pot in this tourney. Then I won a nice pot with 88 vs 76 on a 554 flop... I got it up to 6k with about 25 people left. Then I bluffed off my chips in this great hand : Player brings it in for 300, I call in position with QdJd and the button calls. The flop is AT8 rainbow and the raiser checks, I check and the button checks. The turn is a blank (go figure, I miss my draw), raiser checks, I bet 600 into the 1000 pot, button folds, raiser calls. Its pretty clear he doesn't have a big ace here, probably a hand like JT or KK/QQ. The river misses me again and he checks and I fire him in for his last 2000 or so. He beats me into the pot with KK and then taunts me for being a donkey. Ok, my play is pretty transparent there. I wish I would've bet the flop and that would have helped my cause... but I also get a lot of folds in that spot.

I won a coin flip to get back to 7500 or so and I make it to the final table with a pretty low stack of around 5500. I pick up AK in the SB with the blinds 150/300. A player brings it in for 800 and he gets flat called, I have the easy jam, the original player folds but the cold caller ( who made a number of bizarre plays) had QsQh and called. The flop comes Kh8h3h (I don't have any hearts) and of course the river is a heart. I'd have 12k if I can win that pot and I have a real shot at the seat.

Other than that I went 0 for 7 in sit and goes today. Can't seem to win a coin flip when it counts.

I'm off to beat the tar out of some weak tight losers at 20/40. Wish me luck.

Poker Site Rant...

Here's my poker site rant.

Full Tilt - The outages recently. I convinced my friend Kevin to play the Full Tilt $100 on Saturday and then promptly forgot to register myself. He gets his stack to 18k among the leaders and the site goes down and he loses a bunch of equity as he only gets his entry back. Not to mention their strange policy of awarding payouts in order of chip stack when there is an outage while in the money.

During their most recent outage I was registered for the 9pm Winner's Choice tournament. (I had won a one table satellite a few hours earlier). I still have not received my refund and two emails to support have gone unanswered. Wake up Full Tilt. You've got some of the classiest people in poker representing and running your site and your support and infrastructure are awful.

One more thing about Full Tilt. They changed their structures a few months ago from 12 minute levels to 10. What a difference this makes. Their structure is now essentially the same as Pokerstars but we start with 500 less chips for the big tourneys.

Bodog - The new software is terrible. The whole one window thing is great for people with one screen I guess but its awful for me (three screens). They've slowed the games down because anyone that is multi-tabling doesn't know when its their turn. In the $100k on Sunday I got moved from one table to the next. For some reason they do not just move you, you have to close the table and then it re-opens your new table. I forgot this at one point and then arrived at my new table to find pocket queens in the bb. The action was to me, I put in a raise and the server rejected it! WTF.

When we got down to 2 tables, I wanted to open up the other table. I'm always curious to see who has the chips on the other table and get a little bit of a read on the other players when I get to the final table. First, FINDING the other table was a task. The list of tables (with the corresponding amount of players) hadn't updated in hours. Once I figured out which table still had players, I tried to open it and it said I already have max number of tables open. Since when is the max 1 table? I had another one open earlier playing a satellite.

Also, playing a satellite - you have no way of knowing what the payouts are. Its bizarre. It doesn't tell you how many people started the tourney and it doesn't give the payouts. Now, maybe they are working on this, because I am playing an LA satellite now and I see that they have payouts. 45 people started and they are showing T$750.03 for first and T$11250 for second. Yeah, that makes a lot of sense. As far as I know its first gets a seat and second gets nothing since you need 48 to get a seat (and one seat is guaranteed).

Bodog is trying.. I mean, as a consumer..how can you not like their bonuses and overlays? And their structures have gotten way better. But the old software sucks and its way better than the new software. Bring back the sky blue.

Oh, and whatever lists they have for keeping track of tournament standings is a joke. Those don't work either. One last thing...the new software is a real resource hog.

I guess that's about it. I killed the 20/40 game today. It was a nice change.

Bodog'in it

Had a good tourney result today, took 5th in the Bodog $100k for $5500. Took one particularly frustrating beat at the final table that would have put me in a good spot (AK lost to A7) but of course I had more than my fair share of luck along the way.

I also played the $1000 on Dise as I won a SNG yesterday for it. I took my starting stack below 2500 as per normal, but found KK vs QQ to double up and then got rolling a bit. Eventually I worked it up to 27k with about 150 players left. Then I blinded to about 23k, and I raised from the SB to 6k (blinds were 1-2k) with QT and the BB re-raised me and I mucked. This is with about 125 players left. (110 paid). The next hand I have 17k and pick up AK - Schaefer brings it in in early position for 5500 - since we are getting close to the bubble I think Schaefer's range is pretty big (and he had a healthy stack). It really wasn't a close decision for me to jam with AK even though I didn't think Schaefer could fold - but I didn't think he'd call right away with JT, which he did. He was getting over 2:1, so I understand the call, but I also think my range is pretty tight there. I don't think I ever have 99 or worse. So he flopped three tens and that was the end of me, 15 spots from the bubble. And my streak of never having cashed in a tournament with a buy in over $400 continues.

I'm gonna run the Bodog LA qualifier tonight as well as Dise's last Bay 101 qualifier. I might also run the HORSE tourney on Full Tilt.

As I type both Scheafer and Jacksup are deep in the money on dise, hope they both make the final table.

Addendum : (Shameless brag). Looking through my stats I have entered the Bodog $100 tourney 27 times, paying $2943 in buy-ins. My winnings out of those tourneys are $41,700 (I have a first, third and fifth as well as some other small cashes)... I just wish they'd go back to the old software!

First Week Report

Well... my first week as a full time player has come and gone. Overall I am quite pleased. My best tournament result (other than the Winner's Choice satellite win) was in the Stars $50 on Friday night where I finished third for $2200. I actually cashed in about 25% of my multis this week which is a pretty good clip but so many of them were just in the money finishes with very little payout.

Other than that 20/40 went very well. I actually did not play as many 20/40 hands as I wanted to play - hopefully I'll pick that up a bit this week.

I also made my plans for the Borgata at the end of the month. I'll be there for both the $1500 and $2500 NL leading up to the $10000 main event. I'm hoping to satellite into both of the smaller events to save some money.

A Nice Win

Well I had the nicest win in a long time last night. I won the Full Tilt $200+16 Winner's Choice tournament so now I have a choice between 7 WPT or WSOPC events to play. I am fairly certain I am going to play the Borgata Winter tournament starting on January 29.

I needed a lot of luck along the way (as usual) but I am excited to get back into another $10,000 buyin.

Welcome 06

Well, my only source of income is now poker! Exciting stuff.

I ran in the new year with 3rd in the Full Tilt $100 last night for $3600. That, and I didn't lose in 20/40 for the first time in a long time.

Good luck to everyone (and me!) in the Sunday tourneys.
