Small Update

I spent the weekend winning satellites to big buyin online tourneys that I didn't cash in. So, I lost, but I guess I didn't lose as much as I would have had I bought into all of them...

This week I've played some 20/40 on party, usually 6 tabling. I'm getting more and more comfortable even though it seems like I am making some monster hands but often end up being second best. I've had about 10 sets cracked this week alone and have been on the wrong end of set over set a bunch of times. So, it hasn't been a very good week or month but I'm ok with it because I feel like my game is improving. I'd rather have a really bad Decemember and a great January anyway as that means I owe less come April 15.

My last day of work is Friday, Dec 30, I am so pumped up to play poker full time. I hope to play a lot online in January and may make a trip to Tunica and or the Borgata at the end of the month. Happy holidays to my readers.

Day 2 disaster again

Again, in a big tournament, I do very well on the first day and get crushed during the second day.

Day 1 I drew a table with Jan Boubli and Kido Pham. Amazingly, I managed to get all 300 bb's of my stack in in the first level, along with two other players! We had all flopped the nuts with 54. My 54 was the 54 of hearts and the board had two clubs and one spade. Unfortunately one of the players had two spades and one had a club, so when the turn came a club both Kido Pham and I faced elimination, but the river was a blank and we survived.

My biggest hand of the day was a hand I probably grossly misplayed. I opened for 3xBB (600) UTG with AsKs and had four callers when it got to Kido Pham in the BB. He re-raised to 6000. I had 30k left if I called the raise and he had me well covered. I think Kido is perfectly capable of making a play here as well as holding very strong cards. I gave it some thought and figured him for a pair like 99-JJ. If I had had about 16k after my initial raise the decision would be pretty easy to just go all-in. But since I still had 150 big blinds, I decided to just call. I figure his range to be larger than normal here, I figure he is going to be ANY flop, and if I move in his calling range will be quite small. (And often I would be in bad shape). So I went ahead and decided to just call and then vowed to flop the nuts. The flop came QJT two clubs and Kido bet 10k. I had 30k left, and I was even more certain now that he had JJ or TT and would call if I moved in, so I did, and to my surprise he folded. This meant that before the flop there was a very good chance he did not have a premium hand.

This put me above 50k - during the 200/400 level my table broke and I got moved to the Fontana Lounge. To my direct left were Bruno Fotoussi and Erik Sagstrom (you know, Erik "$10mil playing poker before I was 21" Sagstrom), both with large stacks. In fact I was the 5th largest stack at the table. I avoided confrontations, one a nice pot with pocket kings and finished the day around $68k.

I really liked my day 2 draw. Jen Harman was to my left and John Esposito to my right, but they both had very small stacks. There was only one other player that I recognized at my table and that was Eskimo Clark. Just like what happened at the Stars event and the World Series, I never got above my starting chips on day 2. Eskimo got off to a really good start and I was impressed with his play. Jen and John both busted pretty quickly and soon Mark Seif came to the table. Mark is quite an active player and he was pretty impressive as well. I ended the first level of the day with 60k but the second level was a disaster...

I actually won two pots early, one when I raised with AQ and got no callers and the second in a blind vs blind with Mark Seif. But then I got frisky with a tightish player and re-raised him without a hand and he jammed on me and I was forced to fold. I then splashed around a bit when the following hand came up. A player opened for only 2xBB , Seif called, I called with 5d4d and the blinds called. The flop was 36T two clubs leaving me open ended. The preflop raiser bet small, around 6.6k, which was only about 60% of the pot, so I decided to call. I think in retrospect it was a pretty bad call because I was risking one of the blinds to wake up with a big hand, which one of them did. The small blind raised all in, the preflop raiser folded (what he later said was aces). Now there is $54k in the pot, I have to call $21k. If I call and lose I'm down to about 17k, but if I call and win I'd have almost $100k. I think it was very close, the small blind either had a set, a pair and a flush draw, or just a flush draw. I decided to make the call and he flipped over 66 for a set and it held up and I was in dire straights.

I survived the level with 16k but when we came back the blinds would be 600/1200/200. I sat idle for two orbits, once calling a small raise in the BB (in a three way pot) with 33 and missing the board completely. Soon I was down below 10000. During this time the 1 seat busted and Mark Seif also busted and they decided to bring us Doyle Brunson. I only played with him a few hands but it was pretty darn cool. In the same time I managed to go from 68k to 10k he went from 12k to 240k (in a little over two levels). Soon I was at 7300 and pushed with QJ and got no callers, winning the blinds and antes to go over 10k. On the very next hand, I saw JT and decided to push again but the button called me with AJ and the board gave me no help and I was sent packing again.

Pretty card dead the second day. I saw AQ twice, once I saw the blinds and once I called in a multiway pot and flopped nothing. I saw AJ once and raised Seif's open limp, got cold called by the button and then the BB decided to re-raise and everyone mucked. I held pocket 9's once in the BB but missed my set in a three way pot and gave it up on the flop.

I missed out on the Bahamas this year which is just fine. A bit tired of travelling but I am fairly sure I will be going to Tunica and or Atlantic City in January.

Bellagio $15k

I'm off to Vegas again today. The $15k starts on Monday but I will be out a few days early. I may play the nightly $500 at the Bellagio one or both of the nights over the weekend, but I'll also be playing online some, so we'll see.

I qualified through Pokerroom for this tournament... and they have a blog setup for the 34 people that qualified through their site. The blog address is : http://www.pokerroom.com/blog/5-Diamond-Classic - my username on that site is grebdron. We have at least three very good players on Team Pokerroom that have a very good shot of going deep, SamENole, brsavage and colson10. I'm sure there are a lot of other good players on the team, I just don't know them.

I'm excited and happy to be getting out of the snow. Take care folks.

Bubbles...

On Tuesday I bubbled for the WSOP on UB. I got the chip lead with about 35 left, played for an idiot for 45 minutes, then started jamming and got to the final table. They gave away three seats with fourth getting $1,000. Down to four, in fourth place, with about 12 bb's I jam from the SB into the short stack BB (has me covered by maybe 2 BB's) with AT. He calls with AQ. Flop is T82, but the Q comes on the turn and I bubble. That's the worst. I had a 2005 seat hinging on dodging 8 outs on the river and lost ($0 for second place) and now a 2006 seat if I can dodge three outs twice. (Of course, I did get it in with the worst hand!)

Also played a DS for Atlantis and made the final table again but got fourth. In a third qualifier I ended up 14th of about 200 on Dise for a Bay 101 seat (3 seats). I made one very bad call that cost me most of my stack and then lost on a coin flip to bust.

Last night I played a $25 rebuy for the $650 super. This one had a comical ending in my favor. There were two short stacks and two large stacks with 3 seats given out (4th received $175). Amazingly, the short stacks watch as 1st place busts 2nd place with set over set! wow.

Sunday...

Quick summary of the Sunday tourneys.

Bodog, bust AA early on to get above 6000, then proceed to lose a lot of small pots. Finally down to about 2800 I get it in with QQ vs AQ and lose.

Paradise $30r, in for $240 with minimum chips I get it in with KT vs A9 on a K high flop and lose.

Pokerroom $300. I love this tourney for some reason but never do well in it. Lose 2500 of my 3700 with AQ vs QJ on a QT85 board with the 9 on the river. Proceed to jam with A7 on the button vs an utg limper. Of course he has AT and I lose. (Not blaming him, don't like my push)

Interpoker $200, UTG raises to 120 (4xbb), I make it 400 with AA, flop comes Q high all clubs, I have Ac, I am check raised all in, pretty much resigned to being shown queens. I am in fact shown queens and miss my flush draw/set.

Dise $200. I won the first pot I played for once and felt great sitting at 1700. From there I got snapped off trying to pick up a pot and get it in with QQ vs 55 on an 865 flop for about 20 bbs.

Party $200. Had a bunch of big pairs early but no action. Fall for the ole limp-re-raise with TT vs QQ to get down to 1000. Get the rest of the chips in with KK vs AQ and lose.

Stars $200. Had some chips and lost them. Didn't play particularly well. Busted with Q8 vs A6 in the blinds.

Full Tilt $200. This was embarrassing. One pair does not beat a set, I have to write that on my hand or something as a reminder.

That's a big fat zero for the second week in a row. Oh, I played a UB WSOP qualifer also and lost small pots for 90 minutes, doubled up , and then ran KQ into AA. I played really solid and took all the deck gave me and then try one move and find AA.

Oh, and I played the Stars rebuy for my buddy Kevin. I was in for $101 with 7k at the break. Nice hour for me. Kevin was late getting to the computer to play so I played for the next hour or so. Somehow, I get it to 17k, hand it off, and Kevin finds KK no good against AJ and "we" bust like 800 million spots from the money.

If that all sounds like a lot of poker I also played 1000 hands of 20/40 and booked a small win. At one point I was up enough to book a profit for the day and it slowly went away after that.

Bellagio $5k

Yesterday I played the Bellagio 5k. (Hour levels, start with 10k)

I got into town Friday night and played a one table satellite. I think I really played well - I never really had a big showdown until we were three handed. I had maybe 11k in the BB, SB had 9.5k and the button had the rest of the 50k in play. Folded to the SB who made it 1600 (blinds 300/600), I called with 86o in the BB, the flop came 6 high and my opp moved in. I really thought he had two big cards, so I called, and he had AK and the board came 65342 so we chopped. I had a diamond draw so I was a big favorite going into the river. I ended up getting heads up but I was down 10k to 40k with blinds 500-1000. On the very first hand my opp limped on the button and I found KK in the BB. I made it 3000 and he called. The flop was Q77 and we got it all in and I was surprised to be behind his T7, it held up and I was sent packing in 2nd.

I decided to buy in the next day anyway. The field had 200 runners. At my starting table I recognized colson10 and introduced myself (having played against him a bunch online). I was in the 2 seat and he was in the 7 seat. WPT winner Arnold Spee was in the 8 seat, Scotty Nguyen in the 5 seat and eventually Max Pescatori filled in the 3 seat. The first thing that shocked me was how big of a dick Arnold Spee was. He started arguing with the dealer before the first hand was dealt, that's a new one. We actually had the floor come to the table during the first hand to settle the all important "you washed the cards before you were told" argument. Spee played well early, getting his stack to 13k when he got involved with the 4 seat. The 4 seat limp called, the flop came T54 two spades and the 4 seat check raised big on the flop. Arnold immediately re-raised and they get it all in, 6s4s for the 4 seat, QQ for Arnold. A 4 comes on the turn and Spee went pretty nuts, calling the guy adonk, saying it was ridiculous, etc. I was shocked at how fast he played the queens myself. The very next hand the 4 seat limps with AA and gets Spee to inexplicably put his last 3000 in (60 big blinds!) with KJo and he busts.

My first big hand would come with the 4 seat. I was down to 9000 when I found AK in the BB. I raised the 4 seat (he was the only limper) to 300 and we saw a flop of K72 all hearts. I couldn't remember if I had the Ah, but I bet anyway and the 4 seat called. On the turn, a 9s came off, and I finally had to look at my cards (and didn't find the Ah) and checked. I was practically turning my hand over that I didn't have a big heart, and when the 4 seat bet 1200 I had a decision to make. He could easily be limp calling with any two here. It certainly felt like a semi bluff, but he could easily have turned two pair, has a set or even flopped a flush. I decided to call the 1200 and check call the river if the fourth heart didn't show. The river was a blank and I checked again. My opponent bet 2600 fairly quickly. Now I was a bit sick because if I called and lost I'd be down to 4500 or so. But I went with my read and called and my opponent showed 89 no heart, MHIG and I am up to 13000 or so.

I didn't play an interesting pot for a lonnnnnnng time. Colson10 had lost a few tough pots and was down to 4500 or so but he was hanging in there. Eventually Max in seat 3 busts, Scotty in seat 4 busts and Rene Angelil takes seat 3 and Harry Demetriou takes seat 5. Colson finally gets his double up when we opens for 1200 (blinds 200-400) with only about 4000 behind and the BB calls. The flop is all rags and the BB jams with 9hTh, no pair no draw (ok, there was one heart) and Colson calls with QQ (turn comes a heart but Colson dodges the river). I have chipped up to about 16k at this point where I hang out for a long time. I'm paying a lot of blinds/antes but winning enough on preflop raises to stay steady. Colson picks up another big hand when Harry raises on the button to 2000 , SB jams for about 6000 and Colson jams for about 10000 out of the BB. Harry calls them both with TT and SB has 66 and Colson has AA. The board reads AT986 for set>set>set, don't see that too often but Colson now moves above 20k. I recommend to myself to get aces and get two way action.

I pick up TT and make it 1200 from early position and the 4 seat jams overtop. I had to call 5k, I didn't think he had a big hand, but I remember doing the math and I wasn't getting 2:1. If I called and lost I would be at about 9000, but if I won I'd be up around 25k. I called and my opp rolled over A8o and he made aces full to squash my TT. I must say, that is a really annoying thing. I played really well up until now and then lose one showdown when I'm a substantial fav. I don't let it bother me though... Later Paul Darden shows up in seat 3 and Barry Greenstein in seat 6. Paul has a decent stack but Barry is short. Paul loses a big pot to seat 4 all in preflop with AQ against JT (the guy that beat my TT sucks out again and has a decent stack now) and then this pot comes up. Seat 1 is pretty much a donkey with a huge stack. A hand comes up where seat 1 raises and Paul smooth calls for a big % of his chips. I put him on a pretty big hand preflop. The flop comes J92 and seat 1 bets 4500 and Paul instantly calls. Now I'm pretty sure he has a set because he has already put about 40% of his stack in. The turn is a blank, JJ is still the nuts and seat 1 says, "I guess you are pretty pot committed here" and then proceeds to jam. Paul insta calls with JJ. Seat 1 flips up KT and the Q comes on the river. One of the most bizarre hands ever. Nothing but saying your opp is pot committed and then jamming with a gutshot when your opp has shown enormous strength.

So I'm down to 6200 in the SB on the first hand of the 300/600 level. Folds to me in the SB and its pretty much jam with anything decent here. I find Q7o and jam and the BB hems and haws over T4o and folds, saying he would have called if they were suited (bad beat for me that he wasn't suited I guess). I pick up the blinds and then the 7 seat limps into the pot and I find AA on the button. I decide to just jam again, hoping it will look like I'm stealing... the SB thinks for a bit and calls , limper folds, 99 for the SB. Flop is 9 high, A on the turn and the 8d comes on the river (sure looked like the 9 at the time!). MHIG and I'm up above 16k again.

Fast forward to my bustout hand, I still have about 16k, blinds 400/800, 66 people left, avg stack 30k. Big stack seat 1 open limps in LP. He has pretty much never done this but just raised the hand before and I think he is taking the pedal off a bit but still has a hand he wants to play. I find QJo and call behind. Jimmy Tran now occupies the 4 seat and he calls on the button. The blinds come along and we have a rare limped pot. The flop is Q96 and its checked to the big stack who bets 4k. Two people have shown no strength, so he could be taking a shot at the pot here. He could also be betting a semi-strong hand like 77, JT, J9, etc. I decide to call the bet, hoping everyone else folds and I can re-evaluate on the turn. Everyone else does fold, the turn is a T giving me an open ender also. The big stack jams on me, I have about 10k and there is about 22.5k in the pot. I really think at this point he has KQ, JT, J9, QT or QJ. I am getting over 2:1, and I decided to call. Unfortunately he had KQ, which leaves me with only 7 outs and I miss them and I'm gone.

I thought I played just fine really, not too happy about the bustout hand but so it goes.

December has already been brutal for me, I'm down about 10k already and if I dont' cash next week that will be another 15k loss! Back home on Sunday, Vegas again next Friday...woohooo.

Edit : Congrats Colson10 on getting third place for over $100k. Damn nice job coming back from some tough going early on. VN sir.

Not so Super Tuesday

Had one of those classic nights last night where I had a lot of things go right, then I made some dumb plays at the wrong time and ultimately won nothing.

Played the following tournaments :
Full Tilt's $200+16 qualifier. Got some chips early in the first hour, had it up to 6 or 7k. Went card dead, survived until we were down to 16 or so and got it in with AA vs AT to get up to 20k and in the top 5. This meant I had chips to play with so I decided to re-steal with 85 from the SB against a button raise, he types in "ok, here goes nothing" which is not what you want to hear when you are re-stealing and his A7o held up. I make it to the final table close to last in chips, they were paying 1 $12k seat but second and third had decent cash. My bustout hand goes like this , UTG+1 limps for 1000, next seat limps for 1000, I am in the SB with Kd3d and contemplate jamming for 10k but decide to take a flop and the BB checks his option. The flop is Jxx two diamonds and I jam for 9k into the 5k pot. BB folds and the first limper calls with QJo and my overcard and flush draw misses.

UB's $200+15 qualifier. I draw a tough table with sheets and jsup, and let sheets bait me into a bad call, so I'm down to 700 near the end of the first hour. I crank it up to 6k, lose a big pot down to 2500, crank it up to 7k when I get it in with JJ vs Jsup KK and lose. I'm left with 65 chips and the blinds had to be 150/300 or something. I go from 65 to 12000 in about 20 minutes - and I can't even remember the hands but it was pretty ridiculous. So with about 40 left I'm in the middle of the field and they are paying 3 wsop seats + cash. I somehow burn off about 6k of my stack and then lose with AK vs KK and TT.

Double shootout for atlantis on Stars. Win the first table for the 5th time in about 14 tries and then never get anything going on the second table for the 5th time. Get AQ vs a shorty QQ and lose about 800, then build it back up to about 1200 and find AQ vs AK to send me to the rail. (Again, no money because I was not in the top 4)

Dise $200 for Bay 101. This went about as well as a Dise tourney has gone in the last month or two. I won small pots early and had it to 2500, then blind/donk down to 1500 or so and jam overtop of a limper with A7o who inexplicably has TT, must have been at the 75-150 level. At that point there were about 50 or 60 left and they were paying three seats.

Stars $150+12. Things went ok until I re-raise an EP player with AK, get a cold caller behind, flop a K and go broke against pocket KK. Nice cold deck there (although I'm not entirely happy with the way I played that hand).

Party $150+12. Immediately lose about 450 of that not-so-generous 1000 starting stack, fight/claw my way up to 1800... open a pot with JT for 300, get re-raised, fold, and then blind down a bit to 1250 when I jam with AQ and get called by 66 and lose.

Played for a long time in a couple of those tourneys and really felt like I might win a seat to something but ultimately came up pretty short. Off to the Bellagio on Friday to play the $5k on Saturday. Not sure if I will play if I don't satellite in - we'll see, but looking forward to it.

Back Home

Sorry for the lengthy lack of update.

I'm back home again, been to Amsterdam for a week and then Portland, OR for about 5 days over Thanksgiving.

I played some 20/40 while I was away and did pretty well, getting more and more comfortable in that game. Also played some tournaments and did absolutely nothing...but still its been a good month. Brutal day today however, busted out of everything except the Stars $500 and we're not in the money yet.

Have a trip planned to the Bellagio this weekend. Planning to play the $5,000 tournament on Saturday. I'm coming home Sunday night and then off to Vegas again the following weekend for the $15,000 buyin WPT event.

Some other excitement... I may be turning pro full time as soon as early January - I'm really looking forward to it.

Congrats to my friends the Ottos who won the Friday tourney on Party for $44k.

Update

Grrr, one of those annoying nights last night. Entered the 9pm $150 on Stars, Party, a double shootout for Atlantis and the $200 WSOP/WPT qualifier on Full Tilt. Was in a great spot on Stars in the $150 and on Full Tilt and blew it (even though I did cash on Stars).

On Stars I ran into one of the funniest hands ever. I raised with 44 from LP and a shorty moved in, I called getting over 2:1 on the call and he flips up 43. lol.

Seat 8: 4ofaKindBud (button) showed [3s 4d] and lost with high card Ace
Seat 9: girlontop (small blind) folded before Flop

I also played some 20/40 and booked a small profit for the day, which was nice.

For the past week I've been datamining the 20/40 and 30/60 games on Party pretty much around the clock, 10 tables each. I wrote a script using AutoHotKey (thanks Matt M for that suggestion) that opens the tables every so often, collects all of the data and then i use Pokertracker to import it. Its nice having a lot of data against the players I play against - and I think its really helping me. I still maybe only have 40,000 hands of full ring limit play (about half 15/30 and half 20/40) and the results aren't good - I need to get way better at this before I turn pro because I do not want to deal with tournament variance all the time without some cash game backup.

Oh, and the other night I tried to get into Party hand #3billion. I missed by 90 - I was playing 10 tables and could hardly keep up. (Many of them were shorthanded). Somehow I won a few hundred while I was screwing around. And did anyone else notice that Stars and Party crossed #3 billion in the same night? How odd!?!?

I will not be playing all that much in the next few weeks. I am headed to Europe for a week starting Friday, am back for a few days and then away again at Thanksgiving for four days. And in early December I am headed to the Bellagio -

Good Sunday

Had a good day - took 1st on Full Tilt for $15,000+. A couple other solid finishes (that didn't pay very well..) 15th on Bodog and 11th on Paradise in the $30R. Bodog went great - I was never all in until my last hand - and I got short because my QQ couldn't beat A7, but all in all I played well and ran very very well.

Indiana WSOP Circuit Report...

Here is my Indiana report.

Got down to Caesar's late Friday night and checked in. My plan was to play the $1000+60 mega satellite (to the $10k main event) at 1pm on Saturday and then a one table satellite later if I didn't get in.

The mega satellite started out really well. We got 3,000 in chips and the blinds were 25/25 and only went up every fourty minutes... a nice structure for sure. The first big pot I played was when I had JJ and raise a few limpers out of the SB, only the button called. The flop was 963 and I bet and he called. I really thought at this point 78 was a likely hand, well a 7 came on the turn and I pushed and he called, and I busted him when he missed on the river. That gave me some momentum... I was quickly up to around 12,500 after a few levels. My rush subsided a bit and I misplayed a few hands and was quickly down to only about 2400 with the blinds 200/400. From there I doubled up once, and then again in the blinds with KK vs AQ, and got it back up to 12,000+ a little while later when my AK beat QQ.

We were down to 3 tables now with 14 spots paying seats and I quickly went card dead. Eventually I stuck it in with QT against AK and lost. I finished 24th, only ten spots away. The bad part was it lasted 7 hours or so and I was exhausted. I vegged out in the room for awhile, debating whether I should commit another $1,000 to a one table satellite... I finally decided to. Turned out to be a good decision.

On the very first hand of the one table, I flopped top set and got it all in with a guy who had top pair/flush draw on the turn and I doubled up. (I had 8,000 and the blinds were only 25/50). It was clear there were about 7 donkeys and myself and the young guy to my right. I started adding up what I had heard from him so far, lives in Oklahoma, he was hanging out with Gavin Griffin, I put 2 and 2 together and figured he was ImSoLucky0 from online play and introduced myself. A nice guy and we had a fun time playing the satellite. He got me good when he raised to 300 utg and I made it 900 with KK. He called, and doubled through me when he flopped a set of queens. Things were looking really desperate as I was down to 2400 with the blinds 200/400, there were maybe 4 or 5 players left. Then I caught a rush. I doubled up with 8T when I flopped the nut straight out of the blinds, then later saw a flop with J9 and got it all in with KT on a 89T flop and spiked a J on the river. I finally had some ammo four handed when this hand came up. Imsolucky (Jordan) limped UTG, I limped on the button with AhTh and the blinds came. The flop was AK5 and it was checked to me, I bet 1500 (pot was probably 2400 at this point), Jordan check raised me to 4500. I thought for awhile and got the feeling he wasn't happy with his hand so I jammed, having him covered by a bit. He said "I guess I call" and showed A6 and I busted him to move into second place with three remaining. Third place was extremely short.

I busted third place and we started heads up - me with a small lead of maybe 24000 to 16000. My opponent was extremely passive, once checking his option in the BB with JJ and once with 99. Most hands went like this, I would raise from the button and he would call. He or I would bet into the flop and take the pot down. He was never going to bluff me for sure. On the final hand, I limped with T7 and he checked the BB. The flop was K72 and he check called. I was ready to shutdown but a 7 came on the turn and he check called again, and check called all in on the river with 99 and I had the seat! After picking up my voucher and a few hundred dollars cash, and then being badgered to tip (I hate that), I went back to the room... as it was 2am and I had to play again in 10 hours.

I get to my starting table expecting to see no one I knew, and I was a bit wrong. There were 128 players and probably 12 well known players and I had four of them at my table. Kathy Liebert in seat 2, Scott Fischman in the 5, Erik Seidel in the 6, me in the 8 and Liz Lieu in the 9. We started with 10,000 and the blinds were 25/50.

In level 1, I won a nice pot from the old crazy guy in seat 3. I opened for 150 in EP with T9o, he re-raised to 450 from the button and i called. The flop was J82 two hearts and I check called 500. On the turn, an A came and it went check/check. The 7h came on the river and I bet 1500 and he called and MHIG. One pot I played with Liz. I open from the button for 200 with J9. I meant it to be 150 but the dealer didn't hear me call it out so it stayed 200. Liz called from the SB and the flop came K78. It went check/check and the beautiful T came on the turn. She checked, I bet 300, she made it 1000, I made it 2800 and she folded. I wish i would have just smooth called here but I remember there being a flush draw out there.

In level 2, I played a huge pot with Scott. He had limped a lot in level 1 and played postflop well. He opened for 300 UTG and had me covered by 500 (I had 13k) and I decided to take a flop in position with Ah5h. Everyone else folded and the flop came Ac5c4s. Scott bet 500, and I made it 1500. He thought a sec and made it 4000. I took a lot of time at this point. I wanted to sell AQ, AJ as much as possible but also protect against the club draw and try to figure out if he plays AA this fast. I decided re-raising here would get him to fold, so I just called. The turn was a 6c, not a great card because it completes the flush. But I can't imagine him re-raising the flop with just a club draw. He instantly pushes. I didn't tank too long before calling and he had AK no club. He's got 6 outs on the river and misses and I am up to 26000 and he has 500. Meanwhile, the Seat 1 busts old crazy guy in seat 3 in this bizarro hand. Limped pot, the flop comes 589 all spades. There is maybe 450 in the pot and old guy bets 1200. Seat 1 min raises to 2400. Old guy in seat 3 calls. The turn is an 8 and they eventually get it all in, seat 1 with 89 and seat 3 with 55. I can't imagine a worse play then min raising an overbet on the flop with top two on a one suit board. Seat 1 is a donk, but a donk with chips.

Seat 3 gets replaced by a loose player who is clearly there to just enjoy himself. On one of the first hands, Scott pushes for 500 utg, Liz pushes for maybe 2300 (blinds 50/100 mind you) and seat 3 insta calls with 88. He wins the pot against air from Scott and 66 from Liz and knocks both of them out.

Hands that I recall from levels 3 and 4 : I open in EP with JJ and seat 4 calls out of the BB. Flop is 862 and he leads for pot size and I call. Turn is a 6 and he bets 1500 and I call. River is a blank, check/check, he shows 55, MHIG. Seat 4 raises one limper to 600, seat 5 cold calls, I make it 2400 with KK, seat 4 instantly pushes for 8k total with 55 and MHIG. I get a cheap look in a 5 way pot with 55 in the SB. Flop is AK4 two diamonds, checked around. Turn is an offsuit 5, I lead for 800, BB folds, limper folds, seat 4 makes it 3000 leaving himself 5000 more, I jam on him, he calls with A9 no diamond. He's drawing dead and I have 45k at the dinner break. (Meanwhile Chris Ferguson takes his seat).

Chris has 12k, Kathy about 7k and Erik about 8k when we come back from the dinner break. Erik opens for 850 (blinds 150/300) and I smooth call with KK, and Kathy calls from the BB. The flop is K76 and Erik bets 1600, I call, and Kathy mucks. The turn is a 5 and Erik checks and I jam. He thinks forever before calling with AA. What a nice read it was by him to not put his chips in there quickly. I said that as he got up and Ferguson agreed his chips would have been in there instantly. A few hands later I raise with AK and Kathy jams and I call, she has 99, spikes the 9d on the river (after I had flopped an ace), she says "YESSSSS", but I show her the nut flush and she walks away pretty dejected. I am up to 63k at this point. Erik is replaced by Adam Friedman, the red headed kid that was shown crying on ESPN last week. He thinks he is the nuts, and he isn't, and that annoys me at the poker table. People who constantly complain about what other cards are played by the other people at the table and how they play them are so annoying. Anyway, he bluffs Seat 1 on the night's final hand and does a lap around the table telling everyone how great he is, nh sir. I end day 1 with 56625, good for fourth out of 53 remaining.

I drew Vinnie Vinh with his 66k three seats to my right. The day didn't go well for me. I picked up AA against a guy that was eager to put his chips in preflop but he mucked JJ. Later, he pushed for about 20 big blinds from EP and I called with 88. It was a marginal call, except he had pushed UTG with 10 bb's with TJ. I was very annoyed when he flipped over KK and I shipped 11k his way. I got it back up to 37k when I won a showdown with AQ vs KQ and we were down to 27 and that was the end of day 2.

Day 3 I drew Vinnie again and took a nice little pot off of him early with TT. The blinds were 500/1000/100 now... my stack fluctuated down to 30, up to 40, but I never picked up a hand at the right time. The whole day I pretty much either won preflop or got called and then lost postflop. It was a bit brutal. Finally the blinds were 800/1600 and I had only about 19000. I open pushed with 22, re-raised Vinnie with 33 and suddenly was back up to 29k. Still, I'm the short stack, they only pay 9 spots and we were down to 13. I pick up KK only a hand or two later and open for 5k. MP, who had played tight began to reach for chips and I knew he was raising. I also knew any raise would commit both of us. I was so excited I almost leapt out of my chair. He made it 24k and I pushed in for 4 or 5k more, he looked disgusted and flipped up 33. I was now looking at 80% equity and a pot of 60k to get back into the thick of things. The flop was 754 which gave him 6 outs. They delayed the cards as they were announcing the hand to the crowd and the 3c came on the turn to put me in horrible shape. The 2 came on the river and I was gone. All in once in level 2 against Fischman and now again with 13 people left, both with huge equity.

Looking forward to the $15k bellagio tourney in december for sure.

My turn to run bad...

I knew it was coming... I have been running bad in the past week or two... I did get third in the Stars $50 on Friday night for $2400 but that win was quickly erased on Saturday and Sunday.

I came close in the $650 super on Stars on Saturday, finishing 22nd when they gave away 13 Atlantis seats. Amazingly, I only doubled up once the whole tournament...I guess I won a lot of small pots.

I've also been losing in 20/40... I feared the games were getting tougher but from what I saw last night the games are still really good. I'm just running on the bad side I guess.

Headed to Indiana this weekend for the WSOP Circuit event. Plan is to play satellites for the $10k Main Event that starts on Sunday. Hopefully I get in and then give it a good run...

Been awhile...

Sorry its been so long since an update. Not too much exciting has happened.

I went to Turning Stone last Friday and played the Saturday $500+50. Ironically, I was seated to the right of a player that I donked off more than half of my stack to late in Day 1 of the World Series. Anyway, I felt really comfortable and built my starting stack from 2000 to over 4000 in the first two levels. Unfortunately, I threw most of it away on a big hand I played with another big stack when I only had the second nuts to his stone cold nuts. The tournament structure SUCKED. I remember playing there getting more like T3,000 with blinds starting 25/25 but the first level in this tourney was 25/50. Getting 40 big blinds sucks. After I lost the big hand I had T700 with blinds 50/100 and lost quickly when I pushed from the button with Q7 and ran into KJ.

I had planned to stick around for the $1,000 on Sunday but when I returned to the hotel to play the Atlantis Super the internet connection was down. I also couldn't watch or listen to the Michigan football game so I got in the car and drove the 400 miles back home... On Sunday I played all of the big Sunday tourneys and crashed and burned in all of them. I frankly don't remember anything interesting from any of them, it was a frustrating day.

On Monday I played a few tournaments including a double shootout for Atlantis. I made the final table for the second time in 9 tries and unfortunately for the second straight time nothing went well at the final table. I guess I'll get there eventually but seeing a bunch of my friends make it already its frustrating!

On Tuesday I went for a change-up. I played 2/4 NL on Full Tilt and playing two tables for about 2.5 hours I made $1700. What a nice feeling... I also played some $100 SNG's which was fun. I'm looking for new ways to make money - to help fight off tournament variance. I also made a nice run in the Party $100 that starts at 7pm. I love this tournament because its at a perfect time for me but this is the first time in awhile I've run well. Key hand that got me going : Limp behind a limper with AcTc, blinds also come. Flop is 789 two clubs. Checked to me and I bet 55, BB (short stack around 600) min raises and the player to my right calls and I call. The turn is a club, BB jams, player to my right calls, I jam, player to my right calls. JT for the BB and A9 for the other player and I'm up nicely to 2500. I made it to the final 30 when I lost with KK vs AK and went out a few hands later. I thought for sure I was going to make the final table!!

Last night I played some 2/4 NL and then took a look at 20/40 again. It did not go well, I thought I played reasonably well - I just ran bad. I think the game has gotten worse since Party changed but I'm not sure. I might step back to 15/30 for awhile...

Guess that is all. Hope you are all making money out there.

Monday

Last night I ended up final tabling a double shootout for Atlantis. I had ZeeJustin to my right and Michael123 to my left so I played pretty tight at the final table... anwyay things did not go my way. I worked it up to 1850 or so at one point and then went completely cardead. The blinds got to 50/100 and I opened for 300 with AK and got it all in with 99 and lost. Would have had 2500 if I win the pot and at least a chance to get after it a bit...

Other than that I whiffed in a few other tourneys. Got close to the money on Party in the $150, ending up about 106th with 100 spots playing. Frustrating only because I caught a few lucky breaks but couldn't capitalize and really played poorly the last hour or so. I also played the Paradise $150 with a nice overlay... but finished nowhere close to the money. I told Matt about the tournament and he finished 5th and I'm still waiting for my cut.

Somehow in-between I booked a nice enough win in 20/40 to cover all of my other tournaments for the night. I didn't even play really well I just caught a few lucky pots. One big pot I recall :
Playing shorthanded I raise on button+1 with 76o, button three bets, BB cold calls, I call. The flop is Q64, BB checks, I bet, button raises, BB cold calls, I call. Turn is 5 putting two diamonds on board, BB checks, I check, button bets, BB raises, I cold call for $80, button calls. The river is a 6 and the BB checks and I decide the button will bet and go for the check raise, button bets, BB calls, I raise, they both call and I take it against KK and AdQd.

Weekend Tourneys

The $650 went poorly for me on Saturday. I never really got above 2500 and went down in flames when I limp re-raised with AQ and ran into AQ and AK.

For the Sunday tourneys I will review the ones with interesting hands.

The $300+20 on Pokerroom. I doubled up in the first hour with a set of kings against a flush draw all in on the flop. From there I chipped up to about 7500, blinds 200/400. I open for 1100 with JJ utg and the button makes it 2300. I have him barely covered. I hate getting mini re-raised but feel like folding is too weak with JJ here and that jamming is too reckless so I call. The flop comes AA4. I decide to bet small into him to see what he does... so I bet very small and he thinks a bit and calls. The turn is a blank and it goes check/check. Now I'm pretty sure he either has quads or KK-QQ. I contemplate my options on the river. Its really hard to sell an ace in this spot but I tried to anyway by moving in (this is I'm quite sure far more reckless than jamming preflop, but oh well). Not really that surprising my opp called instantly, but he called with two tens. Lol. Nothing like bluffing with the best hand and getting called. That gave me a bunch of chips and I won an important showdown with JJ vs A8... I had pretty good chips going to the final two tables. With about 13 people left (obviously only good money is at the FT) a player min raise in LP into my BB. Blinds were 1500/3000. I had about 35000 if I recall correctly. It felt like the right time to re-steal so I pushed with 76. He wasn't getting a good price but finally called with KQ and won. Of course you feel like a moron at the time but I guess that kind of play has made me successful lately. So I was out with about a $500 profit which was not what I was looking for.

Party - this one was fun, not. First hand that I recall is a LP limper is raised by the button and I have AA in the blinds. I make it 220 after the raiser made it 60. Only the late position player called. The flop was unique, JJJ. I felt like the best play on the flop was to bet about half the pot , so I did and my opp called without too much thought. The turn was a J. Now I decided to check. I'm either chopping with another ace or I have to get paid off somehow by K or Q high... my opp checked behind. The river was a K and I bet out, my opp raised and we got it all in and I chopped with AK. Bleh. So having chopped that pot I was at about 1350. Blinds 15/30 a late position player min raises to 60. He has about 500 behind. I am in the BB with AQ and jam and he insta calls with A8 and wins. Down to about 750 I jam quite a few times and eventually get it in with 77 vs KJ, flop a set and lose to a runner runner straight. Ah, good times.

Stars - The whole tournament came down to one hand. I open limp with AA utg planning to re-raise. Blinds are 25/50 and I have about 2300. The button makes my day by making it 200. I re-raise to 600 and he calls. The flop comes down KQJ. Can anyone think of a worse flop for a limp re-raise when you have AA and get called? Does anyone have a plan for proceeding with this hand? I ended up betting 900 , the button jammed and I put him pretty confidently on a set but thought perhaps AK was still in that range (and maybe even KQ). He flipped up QQ and I got no 6 out love.

Full Tilt - This was a unique one. I won some small pots early, and built my stack up to about 7500 without ever getting all-in. I never had any premium pairs or sets though. I was playing small ball! The first key hand was when I opened on the button with K9 and the SB pushed. I was getting over 2:1, I think 2.2:1 and decided to call even though if I lost I would be far less than 10 bb's. I rivered the 9 and scooped a nice pot that put me in the hunt. With two tables left I was in a decent spot but I finally picked up AK and raised it up to 4600 (blinds 800/1600), Shaniac came over the top to make it about 12000 and I instantly jammed overtop. He had to be getting over 3:1 to call but tanked... that was a nice feeling! He finally called with KJ and I won the hand. I was now in third with about 15 players left. On the final hand one of those really annoying things happened. I picked up JJ on the button (the biggest pair I had seen all tourney) and made it 6000 leaving myself 40000. One of the two players that had me covered re-raised to 17000 and I had a decision. Against good players in this spot, a big stack pressuring another big (but smaller) stack, this could very well be a re-steal. He could have total air down to something like A9 or a middle pair. Knowing this, I decided my best course of action was to jam. And jam I did, right into AA, and that was the end of me. Played really well and made $100. Just-barely-in-the-money sucks.

Dise - Ah, Paradise, where I seem to always bust without even seeing the first break. With about 1500 (blinds 50/100) it goes limp, CKruel raises to 400 and I have 77. I think I am pretty well off against his range so I jam. The SB instantly re-jams and CK folds and I am up against kings and get no suckout love.

I played some other tourneys, including a nice one on Interpoker where I lost concentration at the wrong time and fell for the limp re-raise when I had AQ. I should have folded for sure.

I then won the $25 rebuy on Stars for a $650 seat, broke even in 20/40 and lost a bunch in 30/60 on Full Tilt. Oh, and on Friday I won $1700 in the Stars $50 when I got fourth... Not too bad all things considered.

Atlantis

Well, Atlantis sats have started! How exciting. I have qualified for the WPT event on Stars the last two years and I plan to do it a third time. Wish me luck in the $650 super tomorrow... I think I'm due. In the meantime all of the blogs have pointed me in the direction of the blogger tournament on Stars. So I registered.

Goin' Pro

Just thought I'd drop a note and tell everyone that I'm goin' pro. I will be a professional poker player sometime next Spring. Right now it looks like I will be quitting my job on April 1 to play full time. I'm looking forward to it!

My plans for the next few months are this... I am headed to Turning Stone in two weeks to play the $500 and the $1000 tournaments they have there. Two weeks later I'm headed to Caesar's in Indiana to try to qualify for the circuit event. That'll be it until December when I go to the Bellagio for the $15k (I won my seat already on Pokerroom). Hopefully I will also win a seat to the Stars WPT Event in January.

Good luck to everyone in the Sunday tourneys.

Sunday Tourneys

I played all of the Sunday tourneys and had a nice cash in one, on Bodog. I ended up third for $9200. One interesting hand happened when I had about 6700, blinds 100-200. A new player (has me covered) makes it 800 in MP and I have 55 in the BB. I am a little reluctant to call such a big part of my stack here with a small pair that I have to fold quite often, but I decide to take a look. The flop is 567 two clubs. I check, he bets 1100 and I make it 3300. He thinks for a second and calls. The turn is an A and I jam and he calls with AdTd. I have no idea what he was thinking but always nice to double up while not risking going broke and having a giant stack at that point in the tournament. Nothing else was interesting until we were three handed.

I found myself getting short, the big stack (MikeVP) pounded away pretty hard at the two smaller stacks. One hand I open pushed with Th9h from the button and the big stack called with 33 and I won. Then I won several hands preflop or on the flop and built it up to 240k just barely in the lead. Then the big hand happened. I limped from the SB with Kc9c and MikeVP raised to 31k (blinds 6/12). I decided to call and broke a number of rules. Don't play against the big stack out of position with a bad hand... anyway the flop brought 988 two spades and I checked planning to check raise. I checked, Mike bet 30k, I made it 100k and he instantly jammed. I felt like he could have a very large range here and called but he had 84. Interesting (but effective) play to raise my limp with such a bad hand. A nice change-up on his part. Anyway, so now I have 2000 and the blinds are 6000/12000 and am the BB the next hand. All over right?

Not exactly. I get AA and double up. Then I get QQ (all in again) and triple up with a set of queens. I'm now in the SB with 24k and jam with J3o (CBL!) and the BB has 58 and I win. A few hands later the smaller stack jams from the SB and I call with A4 and win against K7. From 2k to 100k!

From there I made a bad play when I got a little aggressive with Q8 and jammed from the button, the small stack (who is now only about 4BB's) calls all in with KJ and wins. I double up once more with T9 against 76 and have about 60k, equal with the other short stack when I get A7o on the button. This is a pretty clear jam to me, but unfortunately the big stack woke up with AT and won. An exciting rollercoaster for sure.

I have also started playing a bunch of 20/40 on Party and things have gone really well at the start. Up about $6,200 in 3500 hands. Nice to feel a positive fluctuation in limit as well. I feel more comfortable than ever playing limit, especially full ring...but of course that's because I'm running good right?

Borgata Main Event

I took seat 9 on table 4 for the $9700+$300 main event at the Borgata. We started with 20,000 chips and the structure was sweet, 75 minute levels with blinds starting at 25-50.

The only player I recognized at my table was Padraig Parkinson in Seat 2. He is definitely a character and the jokes that I could hear from his end of the table had me pretty much on the floor. Something about the Irish accent really adds something to it for me.

Anyway, I fluctuated between 18,500 and 20,000 in the first level. I saw some flops in some great implied odds situations but nothing ever materialized. I open raised quite a bit and never really flopped a hand except once with AQ. So I did a lot of continuation bets...some of them worked and I got raised on the flop occasionally. I can't ever remember actually showing a hand until this hand. Since I had been raising a lot, I decided to limp in EP with AsQs. A tight player whom I played with in a super satellite made it 250 on the button and the SB cold called and I called. The flop came down JsTs9c. What looked like a great flop for me probably was, but I wasn't sure how to proceed. We checked to the button who bet 500. The SB called and I decided to just call. The turn was 8h, SB checked, I bet 800, the button called looking like he was stubborn with KK or AA or he had AQ or QQ. To my surprise the SB thought for quite a while and eventually called. I was praying for a spade but a blank rolled off. The SB checked, I bet 500, the button called and the SB folded and the button and I chopped with AQ. How could I have played this hand differently? Should I be able to deduce the button has just a Q and not KQ on the turn and try to make him call a larger bet? Should I raise the flop? Interesting because we're so deep. Obviously I would like to get an offsuit king on the turn and get him to put all of his chips in.

Ok, the other hand that I played of significance was my bustout hand. Second level, blinds 50-100, I have about 18200. MP opens for 300, SB re-raised to 950 and I look down at KhKs. Here's the info on the SB. He has re-raised a late opener twice before, has never shown his hand in any pot and I can't remember him showing strength and not winning the pot. He seems like a decent player but inexperienced... one of those guys that seems blistfully unaware the the guy he is playing against could actually have a hand. Anyway, I re-raise to 2100 and MP insta mucks and the action goes to the SB. He seems very confused at how much it is to call. He puts out some chips and was at least 500 short, the dealer tries to collect him, the SB tries to take the money back...its very confusing. At one point when he sees how much it is to call he doesn't want to call. Another player says that the SB had said "call" in there somewhere - no one argues with him although I don't remember hearing him say it. He finally gets the 2100 in there, so we have 4500 in the middle. I am praying for a low flop because I think he will pay me off with 99-QQ and I don't think he has aces. The flop comes 2s3h4h. He checks and I bet 3500, and he calls fairly quickly. Now, at this point a big heart draw is certainly a possibility, but I think TT-QQ are still possibilities also. The turn is the 2h and he jams, he has me covered, I have about 12000 left and there is 11500 in the middle. I wouldn't jam with the nut flush there, in fact, if I had AhQh I would probably have check raised all in on the flop. After giving it some though, and since I had the Kh I decided to call. I thought there was a chance that this player thought JJ or QQ with a big heart was the nuts there and didn't want to make a bad call and instead pushed. But meh, he had AhQh and I was really bummed. I almost mucked my cards, which is totally moronic. Finally, my cards were flipped and I missed my four outs and I was out.

I felt sick right after I made the call, I knew he was going to flip up the nut flush. Just a good bet on his part and a bad call on mine. I am not making the correct adjustments to live play, especially not deep stacked. Looking forward to the Bellagio still, but plenty of work to do to get better before then.

The Borgata

Headed to the Borgata this weekend. I'm going to try to play in every super satellite I can hoping to gain entry into the main event that starts a week from yesterday. Ideally, this would mean winning the entry Saturday so I can play in the WCOOP Sunday :)

A Thanks...

I wanted to take some time and thank some of the people who have helped me with my game. I've felt like I wanted to thank them even before last night's success...

Anyway, here goes, in no particular order.

Jacksup - Matt has helped me with my game big time. His input over on wptfan has always been appreciated and I'm pretty sure I've read all of his posts there. You add them up and they are better than most strategy books out there. A great player with a lot of success and whenever he scores a big win its great motivation to try to top him. On a personal level, when I write Matt for his opinion on something, he always gives it to me straight, its a nice blend of rooting for me in the big events/tough situations and WTF are you doing in those situations where I need to be thinking a bit harder.

ZeKGB - A good friend and a good tournament player. I've learned a lot from him and he's been there a bunch of times when I have gone deep in tournaments offering live support and advice. His advice like "time to ratchet it up more here" or "seems like the table is playing pretty tight" or "this guy seems a little tiltish" has probably made me thousands of dollars. My roomie at the world series, and someone that deserves to get really hot soon and string together a bunch of nice wins. He's a top 50 player for the year on Stars. Has been on the receiving end of constant whining when I'm running even slightly bad of normal and has absorbed it really well.

Chris - He has helped me a lot with my limit game... particularly a couple of months ago when my bankroll and confidence took a huge hit. I can't say enough about having someone there that you can ask questions to who has been through some bad runs. Someone who says confidently "you're a good player, you'll get out of it, now get back to work".

TheViper - He was my mentor for a lot of months when I was starting out. We always didn't agree on how to play hands, but his advice really helped. I remember writing one ridiculous rant to him afte my bustout in Atlantis and he took a very long time out of his busy schedule to write a very nice reply that I appreciated. He did this a bunch of times for me and always lifted my spirits.

Heather - Heather has always been there for me through the bad times and good. She has accepted poker as a huge part of my life and has been there for every big tournament cash or brutal bustout. Always maintains a positive attitude about things and has been an immense help. Definitely improving as a player as well and is a tough heads up opponent!

To numerous others on Wptfan and DBpoker. Galaxy500, csctiger2, stlouis6, duquedelsol, mk, showtime25, craniac, paulie187 - and many many others. Everyone in that group has supported me at various times. And to all of the others that railbirded last night and at other big final tables, you have no idea how much all of that support means! I hope to return the favor to all of you in your big tournaments.
